BannersDirect.co.uk was started after a need for an online ordering system and fast turnaround being required for such a wide range of banner applications. We realised that people are very busy and often have to compromise when it comes to purchasing a printed banner, either waiting for several proof drawings to be supplied to determine the artwork, or the simple hassle of finding a company that make you the banner that you want.

The word 'banner' derives from late Latin bandum, a cloth out of which a flag is made (Latin banderia, Italian bandiera). German developed the word to mean an official edict or proclamation and since such written orders often prohibited some form of human activity, bandum assumed the meaning of a ban, control, interdict or excommunication. Banns has the same origin meaning an official proclamation, and abandon means to change loyalty or disobey orders, semantically "to leave the cloth or flag". 

In the United Kingdom, the first of these banners were sometimes painted by local signwriters, coachpainters or decorators. From 1837 onwards, more than three quarters of the UK's banners were made by a firm in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. All their banners were made from pure silk woven by Huguenots in London. At the height of banner production there were said to be in excess of 16,000 looms in operation.

More recently PVC has revolutionalised the printed banner industry and is now widely used for the platform material. With the development of computers and machinery pvc banners moved to a whole new level when vinyl lettering could be accuratly cut by machine and applied to the vinyl banner. This still had many limitations when it came to production and scope. Today we have moved on again and now run fast, fully automated banner printing machinery that is able to speed up process time and give truly stunning results.
